A new move to an old city. I lived in Philly many years ago and now I'm bringing my family with me to live there. To start a business. To start two businesses actually. For many people, you can't go home again. I'm not. I'm going somewhere brand new. To catch up with old friends and make new ones. Fishtown is the new hot spot of Philadelphia. With bars and restaurants, hair salons and tattoo shops, bicycle and custom motorcyle shops - this is a NEW Fishtown. My store will be located one block north of Frankford Hall, a Steven Starr restaurant. This is such a treat to have a great restaurant in walking distance! See you in the hood!

I thought we'd be up against it - tearing out the front and installing new windows... Luckily it was not to be the case. A little work with a pry bar and then some caulk. Before I knew it we had installed two windows! Check back for photos!

I always thought it was a lovely day outdoors. Some cute gloves. A sun hat. Maybe a refreshing iced tea. NOPE. The booth looked great and my buying was great. Check out the pics (I'll try to post tomorrow) of the gorgeous pair of chairs, an immigrant trunk and a hot air balloon chandelier that I was able to purchase at the market. Wow. And I do mean WOW! It was an ultra-amazing Saturday at the Philadelphia Flea Market. This was my first time setting up at the flea market and it was their last market of the season. And in this first and last event, there was a TV show there filming and BUYING! I don't want to give away too much, so I will leave it at that. That's the thrift store idea here. But it's better than a thrift , it's far more curated. The owners of these types of shops buy their merchandise and generally have a pretty good eye. Even at these though, the selection has dropped off. Today I was able to buy a vellum suitcase with Rio travel labels. But that was it.

Two of my great sources here have dried up a bit. One has closed up his shop and moved into another neighborhood (pretty far) and the other has refused to sell anything until he sells the items I had passed on two years ago. His warehouse now has a termite infestation. His inventory is all wood furniture. Need I say more?

We went to the airport today to pick up our kids passports. The hoops we had to jump through were many. Red tape and bureaucracy are alive and well here. Thankfully we know how to operate within the system and we got their passports. It just took a little while - like all day.

Sticker Shock

Apparently the antiques business is not immune to the hyper inflation rampant in Brazil. Prices are sky high and quality has dropped off. Important and rare items have become the norm as the market is now flooded with bad copies of designer furniture. What was an exciting market two years ago is now overloaded with poor copies and huge prices.

Rio - A City of Shoppers

Lines are long in almost every store that you visit. Customers are given the choice to pay all at once (always my choice) or to spread out the payments in 6, 12, 18, 24... times. So, every purchase has the option to make payments over time. The consumer is allowed to have immediate gratification for something they would normally have had to save many years to afford. Sometimes getting things too easy comes back to bite you in the end.

This city is growing at a break neck pace. With the soccer games, Olympics and more on the horizon - traffic here is at an all time high. Construction is happening everywhere you turn. And the traffic is growing. A trip to the city center usually takes about 30 minutes. Now, it's two hours. Best to plan ahead!

When I first started out in the antique business, I specialized in antique, period and modernist frames. I knew my merchandise and I knew my clients taste. When I bought something, I knew exactly who would want it and what to ask for it. I brought everything directly to my customers and always went home with a check. Business was great. Over the years my family life grew and I also grew my business. I began to set up at more shows, open a booth at antique centers and my customers came to me. It was a bit of a turn around. Now, I was waiting for someone to come by and see something they might like. While I was appealing to more people, I felt like I had less control. Thanks to some great advice, I have made the choice to open my own store. This will be my first endeavor as such and I can't wait. I hope to make it a blending of my original and changed business style. I'll let you know what happens...

Pier Show Set Up

Set up was super early! I was in line at 5am with all of the other crazy dealers waiting to be allowed to unload. The staff of the Pier SHow did a great job (as usual) and my set up went super smooth. I jetted over to the truck rental place, returned my box truck and grabbed a cab back to the Pier to set up my booth. After a lot of moving, unpacking and re-arranging - the booth looked great. Apparently the color of your outfit has a big significance in Brazil. Each color is associated with a different desire - love, peace, money, etc... We'll be wearing white. The color for purity. We're already getting the outfits together. White is not always the best choice for little ones, but we'll see how it turns out...

The producers of America's Lost Treasures have selected my painting as one in the running to be chosen America's Lost Treasure! Before we left for Brazil, I submitted the unsigned painting of the woman playing the violin for the dying soldier. I thought the story, now a ghostly love story set during the Civil War would be intriguing. Looks like they thought so too. Now, I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Lots of small streets and a lot of hills. So happy we have an automatic. We're putting lots of miles (actually kilometers) on our car and enjoying every minute! It's an adventure finding all of the shops and stores. It's a lot of this, 'When you see the place where the gas station used to be, make the next left'. Huh?

Wherever we are in the world, the first place I always want to go is the local flea market. Today was no exception. The market was great, but my accent definitely raised the asking prices. What the sellers don't expect me to find out is that they have placed the same merchandise for sale on line with much different (read: lower) asking prices. As my Dad always says, Knowledge is Power!

Another day of deliveries at Center 44. Today we placed an important painting by Stephen Pace in our boutique. A large abstract work dating to circa 1958, it exhibits strong colors and brush strokes. Along with the work by Pace, we also placed three large works by Russian artist Evgeniy Andreevich Agafonov. These works have rich jewel tones and exhibit symbols of Russian history.

It was one of those Saturdays that got off to a late start. Even still, it was a great one. We headed to Center44 for a little more booth arranging, actually placing a few things in the booth and then over to the NYC flea market. While it was a shut out, I still love going there! Afterwards we went to the East Village and had some amazing ice cream with a good friend. A great day!

We spent the day hanging out on Greenwich Avenue with an old friend. A great lunch and coffee, it was the perfect day for window shopping and people watching. Afterwards, we headed up 95 a little to visit a dealer friend at an antique show. It was a fairly new show as shows go. The booths all looked beautiful and there was some amazing merchandise being offered. It's always nice to see what's happening in all areas of the business and after talking with a few of the dealers, it seemed that everybody was happy.

Artist Framing

That's the kind of framing that you usually see on art from the mid Century. More often than not, abstracts. It was a quick way to cover up the edges of a painting. This strips of wood are tacked onto the sides right into the stretcher. Sometimes painted, sometimes left as bare wood. Over the years this kind of framing evolved into that very simple gallery molding (in my opinion). I made some myself today to cover the edges of a few paintings. Amazing what a difference it makes!

A slow start. I watched the crowds run in and right past my booth. Wondering what was happening, I stayed positive and kept up a great attitude. Hours passed by. I was really getting worried. And then... WOW! Ten pieces sold in about 30 minutes. I guess you could say that when it rains, it pours. The bar cart, a pair of lamps, coffee table, Italian pottery, a pair of Brazilian tables and a bunch of other things all sold. It was a great day!

I always figure that I won't need to rent a truck on the way home from a show... This time I did, but at least I had a lot less to load. The packing and loading into the truck went super fast as I only had four boxes and a couple of hand carry pieces. This past weekend at the Pier Show was awesome. What's the better business model? Smalls sales that add up or one big sale? I've been on the fence about this and I'm still up there. Both, are great ideas. The first keeps you going. The second gives you a big hit. I guess it has to do a lot with what you're buying. If you're happy buying small (price wise) things, then you'll score once in a while on something but for the most part your business is slow and steady. But if you go for it. If you risk it all on one big thing, well, then the pay off is incredible. But how is the time in between the sales? Still a lot to figure out...

What the...!? I headed out early to the NYC flea market and was happy that I did. I bought two amazing vintage dress forms on the original industrial stands! They are amazing! After the market, I headed over to the HKFA boutique at Center 44 to add some vases, pots, large scale rulers, paintings and more to the mix. After a couple hours of re-arranging and photographing, I headed back out to grab the car. Only to see that there was a blizzard! The drive back to Connecticut was over two hours instead of the usual 50 minutes. I was happy to get home safely. Right away we (the family) headed outside to play in the snow and build a snowman! What a great day!

Painting and Lamp Research

Well, I spent the day sending out emails to see where it would lead. Apparently, it led to Hungary. The first was the Niko Braun painting. The inscription on the back of the painting is dedicated to the Brown family and was done so in December 1922. Mr. Braun's son, changed his name to Brown. I know that Brown is a popular last name, but I am intrigued. More research to come. And, while still in Hungary, the Lili Markus lamp is becoming more and more interesting. After she and her family fled Hungary to live in Great Britain, she continued to work and export her work. This lamp is unusual as it was dedicated, before the firing, to Carole Stupell. Carole Stupell owns a very famous store in Manhattan. Calls have gone unanswered. The search continues...

Sad News

I just heard about the tragic passing of a friend. He was Robert Loughlin, the famous New York artist, vintage furniture dealer and icon. I first met Robert at the New York flea market in 2002. He was one of the regulars who was there every weekend well before sunrise. He was a fixture at the market who had bought and sold some of the best stuff to the world's most famous artists, celebrities, dealers, etc. A visionary in the world of mid Century furniture, he was dealing in designer furniture before it was the rage. One morning I arrived at the market with a chair I found on the street. I asked Robert if he would paint it for me. This is the chair that is on my site. It is a work that I will cherish forever. I wrote my weekly ARTFIXdaily blog about Robert and this chair. Click here to read it.

We didn't dare test the waters and drive to the East side during yesterday's Presidential visit to the United Nations. Wow. I spent 45 minutes in line at the Post Office today. I had to ship a small package to Brazil. When I first tried one of the other shipping companies, it was well over $300. Um, no thanks. By the way, there was no line there... So I headed over to the Post Office. When I finally got up to the window, I was able to mail the same package for just $46. Time well spent? Time is money? Yes and Yes. I caught up on my social networking in line and was happy with the savings.

Went to some of my favorite shops in Tarrytown today to do a little shopping. Although there was plenty there, there wasn't anything for me. What I did see was a friend who operates an awesome gourmet shop called Mint, doing construction on his new project. There was a lot of running back and forth across the street and it was awesome to see new business happening. We love to shop and eat at Mint (on Main Street in Tarrytown) and we can't wait to see what he'll open across the street!

As the famous 26th Street flea market winds down (it's closing soon), it's bittersweet. Sure, there's progress, but where's tradition? It's already a fraction of it's former self from the heydays. But, there's still finds to find. I bought a gorgeous pair of French copper double handled urns with hand chasing. Very nice. Oh, and on another note, I got some awesome tomatoes from my friend Anthony Rosa. Fresh from his garden and devoured by my family and me, they were terrific!

An Ultimate Weekend!

After the flea market yesterday, we (nine of us!) piled into our minivan (no soccer mom jokes, please) and headed down to Manhattan. This was my second trip there in the same day, but I didn't want to drag everybody there at 4am! We were headed to the Ultimate Absolute NYC Submission Grappling event. My husband was competing and we were all there for support! This was his first tournament in over six years and also one that he agreed to do with only a week's notice. He made it to the Quarter Finals. We were all so proud and excited. It's great to see him competing again. His focus had only been on his Mixed Martial Arts career for some time, and now he's back on the mats as well. Check out his site, Daniel Gracie.

Stalking or Doing Business?

It's a tough economy out there, no doubt. That being said, there are still plenty of people who are buying antiques, art, furniture, and so on. I have a couple contacts that I would like to work with... Now, how do you get something going without seeming like a stalker? Some of you may be thinking that if the other party is interested, they will contact me. Yes, I can understand that. Then, there is always the "squeakiest wheel gets the most oil" saying. Both are right. And wrong. Here's how I see. In order to survive, you have to have your name out there where people can see it and see what you're doing on their own terms. All of the social media has placed our info on the web for all to see when they want to see it. Updates every second, without true depth. How much can I really say in 160 characters? Not enough. So, yes, I do use all of the social networking. And no, I don't use it every second of the day. I am using it to get my name out there to remind people that I am here. Now, back to my original question about how much reminding? I am still on the side of being a bit of a pest. Each week I send out over 800 emails when my inventory is updated on 1stdibs. So far my, "please stop emailing me count" is around 20. That's not bad from a percentages point of view. Of course, I prefer everyone to be waiting on pins and needles for my updates, but this is life. So, for the couple of contacts I want to start to work with (and you know who you are) look for a friendly Facebook message or a quick text this week. And don't worry, if you don't reply, I'll follow it up with a friendly email...

Any way you spell it, it's the focus of my research right now. The painting of St. Michael depicts him in an elaborately decorated suit of armor. Who doesn't love a hold? It's very rewarding to know that people are interested in your items. Of course they usually need approval to purchase, so they hedge their bet and place the item on hold. Really shows their interest. Now, I have a double hold on the Near Pair of Side Tables by Jorge Zalszupin. Cool. Oh, and a Very prominent NY store is interested in the dining table with six chairs. Sure the antiques always look perfect when you put them in your home, but the road to perfection can be a dusty one. I made a trip a the local hardware store to pick up some of the essentials in the antiques trade. Some gentle cleansers, a few different waxes and polishes, of course electrical tape and wire nuts for the chandeliers that I bought yesterday. So, when you see the pieces for sale, you'll know that they have been well cared for.

Well, it's a good opener anyway. Todat I bought three amazing chandeliers. One is a great wrought iron six light chandlier with a lyre, another is also wrought iron in a classically modern design with 8 lights and the third is a twisted, spiraled, coned 18 light masterpiece of hand craftsmanship. Well, since the Summer has unofficially begun, I thought it would be a great idea to buy a fireplace set. Huh? Well, I really couldn't pass it up, the set is beyond complete. A Call From London on The Old Master

Unloading a Huge Truck at Brimfield!

I arrived at the field a little before 6am. The tent was set up and all I had to do was to unload a HUGE 12 foot rental truck filled beyond capacity with way too much furniture, art, lighting, sculpture, frames and more... The dealers began checking in to see what I brought. I spent the whole day setting up all of my items and at the end of the day, I was exhausted and so happy to be at Brimfield. Opening day is tomorrow!

A great opening day here at Brimfield! The crowds rushed in promptly at 9am when the gates were opened. Running, pushing, shoving and yelling. It was quite the exciting start to a great day. Sales to dealers were also brisk. Here's a round up of what sold today: the Regency X Base Farm Table, the Pair of Brazilian Ceramic Lamps and the Swan Magazine Rack all sold to one buyer, another buyer took home the Sunburst Mirror to Atlanta, GA, another buyer purchased the oversized Driftwood Lamps... the pair of Balance Beam Supports, the Industrial Landscape and the Striped Canvas Trunk all sold to the same buyer, the Brass and Leather Architect's Stool and Brass, Lucite and Enamel Lamp sold to another buyer, and there were lots more sales!

New Day = New Space

The Brimfield experience is one that is constantly evolving. I was set up on Tuesday and Wednesday in space J23, all the way in the back of the field. After Wednesday, that part of the field is all but a ghost town. So, this morning, I packed up the truck and moved on up to space A53. A little hard work should pay off tomorrow!

Andrew Martin Chest of Drawers - SOLD

So, he was walking by the booth and I knew he would buy the Andrew Martin chest of drawers. There was no poker face. And I was happy to see someone so happy with their purchase. It was only when he returned with a Jeep that I became nervous. Would it fit? And the answer was... Yes! There was about a centimeter on either side of the piece after we carefully placed it into the Jeep. Now that's a perfect fit!

Kind of sums it up. The majority of my neighbors at Heart O The Mart recommended that I pack up on Saturday. I chose to stick it out even with the forecast of a rainy day. And it paid off! The buyers were still there and I wound up selling the Peroba Wood Lounge Chair from Brazil! Thanks!

Was up well before the sun and at the NYC flea market. Scored an amazing French striped canvas trunk (look for it at Brimfield, HOTM J23). Then I drove up to Center 44 to drop off a pair of gorgeous oversized lamps, a pair of Brazilian Jacaranda side tables and a single contemporary wood table. The three piece garden set is still on hold and now there's someone who's 1st on the waiting list. Then it was down to the flea market to pick up the trunk, then further down to TriBeCa to pick up six more framed paintings. Finally headed back to CT to pick empty out the minivan into our apartment, then head over to the local U-Haul to pick up my truck and un-load my booth at Hiden Galleries. After the truck was loaded (which didn't take too long) the tough part began. Everything had to be brought up to our apartment. Brimfield can't come soon enough! Ha ha ha! Lots of great things are happening!

Super Busy Day

I really do love to be busy! Today was no exception. In the morning I picked up the boxed items from my booth at Hiden Galleries, then I went to the glass store to pick up three pieces for a pair of Brazilian side tables and a single table, then on to the hardware store for some brass screws to fix up a great brass architect's stool and then back home to put some finishing touches on a great pair of mid Century driftwood lamps with awesome finials. Look for all of these items and more when I set up in Brimfield at Heart-O-The-Mart J23!

Well the show is out. Here's the premise: get a bunch of antique dealers together, each with at least 100K to spend on antiques that the show brings in for them. The dealers would then buy the antiques and re-sell them. It seems like the show will be picking out the antiques. I wanted to be part of it, but I've never really bought that way. Seems like it could get messy? And now onto other things, my frame appointment was successful: sold three. Just not to the original buyer. When I pulled up and un-loaded 20+ frames he came out and said, "Um, nothing here for me, thanks." Super. On an aside: I did tell him about my inventory of Brazilian furniture. He said he's looking for a desk. Maybe there'll be a sale anyway. Now back to my story, so before he was back inside his gallery, I was on the phone with a Park Avenue gallery a few blocks away. I picked up the Carrig-Rohane and Philip Yates frames from the restorer. They look amazing! My restorer in Westchester did a great job and both frames have been returned to their original beauty! NYC Flea Market Shopping

The past few weekends at the flea market were shutouts for me. Today was different. I bought two really great paintings. One is a terrific illustration in grisaille by Lu Kimmel. The other is an incredible abstract from 1954. Check back for images! That was it, though, there's more... I dropped off the first great French garden set (the one with two chairs and a bench) at Center44. I also picked up eight paintings from my framer (L & O in Tribeca) and they all look amazing. Then, I had an appointment in the Financial District to see a Stella sofa by Sergio Rodrigues. This sofa may be in out booth at Center44 soon. Check back to know for sure!

The tastes are changing, most are looking for important Modernist frames as well as the important signed Arts and Crafts style frames. Interestingly, the Hudson River School frames have fallen out of fashion somewhat.

Anyway, the call I had today was amazing. 26 fantastic frames by makers like Carrig-Rohane, Yates, Newcomb-Macklin, House of Heydenryk, Foster Bros and more. I really couldn't be happier to be back at my roots. Frames are works of art. Carved, gilt, painted. Square, round, rectangular. They come in all shapes and sizes and widths. It's not really the reason why we use green in our logo, but it does fit today. One time I painted my apartment. I called my grandparents to tell them about my apartment. My grandfather laughed and asked if I had painted it green. I had painted it green. We both laughed. That stuck with me. So, green it is!

Isadora Duncan Painting and Artist's Bronze

Well, today was set up at the Pier Show. The energy was high and the excitement was, too. Feeling great to be set up at the show, I unloaded my truck, went and got another load and did it all over again. After a long morning and afternoon, I went for a walk around the Pier. That's when I saw the most amazing painting. It's almost life size. An oil on board of a nude woman. Turns out the woman is Isadora Duncan. The painting was done in 1933, six years after her death. Obviously the artist was incredibly inspired by the modern dance icon. And when I was about to take my painting and run, a bronze bust caught my eye. With an amazing patina, I thought it was something special. This, it turns out, was the artist himself. The bust graced his house for over 50 years. Amazing stuff indeed.

A lot of my time is spent looking for great antiques and mid Century design. While the internet has helped to make the world a smaller place, you are still searching the entire world (digitally). That's a lot of files to go through. It doesn't always feel the same as jumping in the car and hitting the road. That sense of an adventure you have when you first walk into a shop wondering what might be there. This, to me, is what its all about. The search is half the fun. The time is right to get back on the road and check out some local shops. You never know what could be right in your own backyard!

Picked up some great Brazilian furniture today. A gorgeous Lafer lounge chair as well as a bookend pair of sofas with great grey leather cushions. The lounge chair is so comfortable you'd be hard pressed not to fall asleep in it. The pair of bookend sofas are so fantastic that they will compliment any decor as well as cradle you in comfort. Started off the New Year on the right foot. Literally. At midnight we watched the ball drop, stood on our right foot, ate 12 grapes, toasted, kissed, then ate a dinner of 'lucky' foods from traditions from around the world. It was a great time. Picking Up a Chair in NYC...

Sounds easy enough. Head downtown. Meet the seller. Pick up a chair. Or not. We couldn't have hit more traffic. Every turn we made was the wrong one. Between street closing, traffic cops and out of town drivers, we were stuck. At least we had some great scenery. Nothing like the energy and excitement of NYC. Without fail, we got the chair. Near the end of the day, I ran over to Hiden Galleries to place that fantastic chair into my booth. I can't believe how cool it is! Never seen anything like this. A wrought iron wire cage with leather straps woven onto and into the frame. With all of this 'look' it's comfortable to boot! Who could ask for anything more? Oh yeah, maybe a pic? Old Master Research

Went to the library again last night, photocopied about 100 more pages from Ms. Sicotte's thesis on the Montreal art gallery W. Scott and Sons. What I'm doing now is getting all of the exhibitions, auctions, shows, fairs, etc that W. Scott and Sons was part of. Now, the really fun part. Look for catalogs for those exhibitions and hope that the painting of saint Michael is pictured. The weatherman is forecasting snow for tomorrow, so looks like I'll have a little something to do.

So yesterday I trudged to our local library, over and through many sidewalks that had not been shoveled and many intersections that had been plowed. You know what I mean when I say this? The plow left a wall of snow (and dirty ice) right in front of the sidewalk. I left my mountain climbing equipment back on Mt. Everest, so I did a quite graceful high jump. Landing just fine. Landing into a waist high pile of snow. Brr. Okay, enough complaining. I got to the library, didn't I. Sure did. And it was closed. Awesome!

The other book I was looking for came in from Canada. Again, it's all in French and Santa didn't bring me the Rosetta Stone program so my French is still limited to that famous Patti La Belle song. Today was a good a day to catch up on paperwork and shop online. The snow shut down the train service in and out. The roads around here were sort of cleared. The sidewalks weren't cleared. Christmas Tree and Decorations

Today is technically a work day. But I gave myself the day off. We went shopping for all sorts of fun and funky decorations and then went out and picked the perfect Christmas tree. Getting home, making some hot tea and putting the ornaments on the tree was a perfect capper to an awesome day!

I was given the contact info for a person at The Getty Museum who may offer some research help. I just sent an email. So check back to find out what happens. By the way, the Museum of Fine Arts Montreal replied. It seems that the 'Man in Armour' referred to in Hélène Sicotte's thesis on W. Scott and Sons which was later donated to the Museum of Fine Arts Montreal from the Learmont Collection, is in fact still in their collection and therefore could not be my painting. I knew it was an outside chance, but you never know. Keep searching! And on another note, be sure to check our latest offerings through 1stdibs!

Found another possible lead... perhaps the Old Master was called 'Man in Armour' and was part of the Learmont Collection. This collection of paintings was donated to the Art Association of Montreal in 1909. I have contacted the archivist at the Museum and I'm waiting to hear back from them on their research! Will keep you posted!

This time it was for our home. We got a gorgeous Andrew Martin trunk style dresser that fits perfectly. With three drawers and a flip top lid, it is just right!

Some Research Materials Have Arrived

The library here in Stamford has received some of the research materials that I requested. The research into the Old Master - Man in Armor - Saint Michael painting has begun. So far, I received two catalogs from the gallery that at one time handled the Saint Michael painting. Both catalogs are about British art, but any catalogs are helpful. The other book is incredible! Even though they only sent Volume One. A researcher named Helene Sicotte wrote a huge Two Volume work about the gallery W. Scott & Sons. Just one thing - it's all in FRENCH! So, seeing as how I cannot speak, write or read French, it has been slow going. Also, I can't take the book out of the library, so I've made about 100 copies so far. There is an entire chapter about Old Masters, so that's what I'm focusing on. Check back to see how it's going. Oh, and if anybody out there knows Helene Sicotte, please let her know that I would like to speak with her! Thanks!

Anatolii Belkin and Unsigned Painting - NEWS!

Well, it looks like the Anatolii Belkin painting has a lot to say. After researching we've come to learn that the paining is not simply a cubist samovar - it speaks about the famous Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky, the Russian newspaper PRAVDA, the Russian anthem up to 1944 - Workers of the World Unite and more. Check out our Treasure Hunt page for more info! Also, the unsigned painting of the woman playing violin for a wounded soldier... Well that's a representation of a famous ghost story! During the Civil War, a Captain was very ill and a woman would play violin to him to ease his pain. The Captain died and soon after the woman. Check out the Treasure Hunt page for more info!

Yes, and all of them hand carved! We all enjoyed this spectacular, of excuse me spooktacular, event. The scenes included a giant spider web with 100's of spiders, a huge pyramid with mummies, a grave yard with too many skeletons, bats, angels and creatures... The scenes went on to include dinosaurs, pirates, snakes and so much more! It was another great treat on a cold fall evening! Happy Halloween!

We spent the day in Tarrytown. A little shopping and a lot of fun. Our visit to the Sunnyside house (Washington Irving's home) was really a treat. After making a scarecrow and seeing a shadow puppet show, we took a spooky walk through the woods. It was awesome!

We had an appointment with John Weiss of Lillian August today. As soon as we arrived at their flagship store in Norwalk, we could feel the energy. The showroom had one beautiful furnishing after another and the decorators, designers, architects and staff were working on so many projects your head would spin. It was a great meeting with a funny coincidence and we are so glad that John continues to buy from us!

Center44 - Chairs & a 500 Pound Table!

Luckily, I can report that I didn't get a hernia. I guess you know when anything starts that way, it can only get more interesting. Today, I placed a gorgeous set of can Louis style chairs - two arm chairs and three side chairs - in our booth at Center44. The set is from Casa do Leandro Martins of Brazil. This famous maker of fine furniture employed some of the most skilled furniture makers, many directly from Europe. The chairs, dating to the 1940's, are completely hand carved and have cane seats and cane backs. In addition to this set, we also placed a great set of eight mid Century dining chairs - six side chairs and two captains chairs. The set has a stream lined look and dates to the 1960's. And, oh yeah, THAT table! It is monumental with this cool pre-historic kind of look. An amazing hand cut stone top with mica throughout floats above a solid peroba wood base. Heavy doesn't begin to describe it. But, fantastic does, too, so it made the move totally worth it!

Do I Need a Storage Unit?

Should I keep everything in my booths? Is it best to keep the booths more sparse? This really presents a tough question. I do usually lean to the side of more is more. For better or worse, I like to have my inventory on display and available to my customers. Maybe they'll have to do a little digging or lifting or moving, but what's a treasure hunt without a little looking?

At Center44 Today - Chess Set, Sconces, Game and More

After spending the morning at Hiden Galleries - we placed a print and re-arranged after a flurry of sales, rentals and approvals - we jumped on 95 and headed to the city. Arriving at Center44, the line for the Rachel Ray was long and stretched across the door to the loading dock. We were rushed into the loading dock, so that celebrity Suzanne Somers could leave. Nice timing! While at Center44, we placed a studio pottery chess set of Angels versus Demons, a pair of arrow double-arm sconces and a really interesting 'Game' from Brazil. This game - 'Jogo de Ideal' - looks like the game of life, complete with all the pitfalls you could image. How this game differs is that it is entirely hand painted in a carved wooden book/case with hand made metal clasp. The images and spiral game board make it a lot to look at. You'll have to see it to believe it. And, check out our latest video on YouTube!

I'm sure you've noticed that I spell the word Brasil with an s. This is the correct way to spell the name of the country. For some reason, in America the word is spelled with a z. It was an awesome Brimfield week. Opening day was only for those of you who are true antique lovers as the temperature hovered around 34 and it rained all day. With all that, the buyers were there in full force. The pews, railings and iron all sold. The tabernacle frame, nude in a seascape painting and indian clubs all sold. The aluminum H, Newcomb Macklin frame and WPA painting all sold. The pair of industrial tables, pair of Arts & Crafts frames and metronome all sold. After last week’s superb find, this week proved to be just as exciting. A house call in Santa Teresa was an awesome one with loads of great mid-Century Brasilian modernist furniture and furnishings. Fantastic Sunburst Mirror, Oh, and Carnaval!

Praca Quinze once again proved to be a great source. It was the Saturday of Carnaval and getting to the fair was a bit of an adventure. The Parade of Carnaval is in the same neighborhood as Praca Quinze. A few street closing and a few thousand people extra couldn’t stop us though. And we are happy with the mirror. The rays of the sun are totally hand carved and of varying lengths, The mirror is convex and hand silvered. It’s really something special. I’ve promised some pictures to a few designers, decorators and architects, but if you’d like some too, just send an email.

Jacaranda Sofas, Drafting Table, Garden Furniture & Mais

Mais. It’s Portugues, (Brasilian), for more. I figured since we’re here, I should share a bit of this beautiful language. This past week, we purchased two mid-Century sofas in Jacaranda (Brasilian Rosewood), a fantastic drafting table with a base that is super intricate, a set of wire basket style garden furniture and a three piece set of two end tables and a coffee table in a super natural style. Crafts Style Recliner & Spanish Style Chandelier

The adjustable recliner is made of peroba wood and is very elegant. Crafts style, probably dating to the 1970’s, the back is adjustable. The brass pins that hold it in place have a great patina. Also, the Spanish style wrought iron chandelier is so awesome. Made from wrought iron, copper and brass, this chandelier is eye-catching!

Louis XV Chair + Ottoman!

When I tell you it’s hot, I’m not exaggerating... we were at Praca Quinze again this past Saturday and we were sweating! As usual there were lots of vendors set up offering everything under the sun (no pun intended), but what we found is truly special. A beautifully hand carved Louis XV chair and ottoman. I believe they date to the late 19th Century, but they could be even earlier. We’ll be out antiquing again this weekend, so check back for more news.

Garden, Antiques, Chinoiserie, Modern, Brasil!

As you would expect, we’ve purchased a suite of antique English garden furniture by Coalbrookdale. Huh? Yes. English garden furniture in Brasil. The suite is truly spectacular with a gorgeous bench and four matching chairs all in the Fern and Blackberry design. In addition, we’ve purchased a lovely table and set of chairs and a faux bois table base in cast iron also for the garden. And for inside the home... we’ve purchased a set of four Louis XV chairs, a single Louis XV chair with matching ottoman and a Chinoiserie style lacquered coffee table. And there’s the ultra-Modern resin over goatskin coffee table with a darkened glass top and brass inlay. The legs of the coffee table are thick, solid glass panes. Very chic! Brasilian Lamps (again)...

Well, we were walking through the very famous outdoor antiques fair at Praca Quinze. Enjoying the weather (hot), the offerings (fine) and the food (delicious). Not really expecting anything as we were more doing tourist-y things, we came across a pair of lamps. Actually the same pair of Brasilian lamps that were sold through Hiden Galleries not too long ago. As an aside, these lamps are now available for re-sale from a very famous NYC lighting dealer. So, back to Praca Quinze... we purchased the lamps and they are beautiful. This pair has far more detail than the first pair. The circles that were plain on the first pair, are now evident as bamboo. The basket weave design that was plain on the first pair, now has a gorgeous texture. We’ll be sending them to NYC for re-wiring and then onto to Connecticut for placement in one of our booths at Hiden Galleries. There are more antique fairs this weekend, so be sure to check back. Well, the HKFA & A organization is now in our sister city, Rio de Janeiro! Searching for antiques and enjoying everything this beautiful city has to offer. Strolling along the old streets in Centro, one is reminded of the European, especially Portuguese, influence. That also goes for the antiques here. We’ll keep you updated... And to let you know, the grand stack of six English metal trunks has sold.

English Metal Trunks, Iron Jardinieres, Lowriders and More

Over the weekend we placed some wonderful pieces in our two booths at Hiden Galleries. There you’ll see a fantastic stack of six, black painted, English metal trunks in descending size - a few trunks have hand lettered names. In addition look for the pair of classic wrought iron antique jardinieres with triple arrow design and circular supports - these are Circa 1900 - 1920. Then there’s the cinnabar colored leather trunk with nail head trim - all over an oak base. And, we’ve placed the 1960’s totally customized Schwinn lowrider into one of the booths. This amazingly sculptural bike is a true work of art! Check out these and all of our other pieces. Be sure to also view the collection of works by African American artist Keith Kerton Lewin. Mr. Lewin traced his history to Jamaica, and later called Brooklyn, NY his home. The paintings are all of the mid Century (mainly 1940’s) and represent some of his favorite models. These portraits run the gamut from nudes to clowns - you’ll have to see them to believe them!

Well, the sales keep coming. Just as soon as we’ve re-arranged the booth, something else sells! The industrial style artist’s console table on wheels has sold. We’ll be bringing some new items into the booth including an articulated floor lamp and the Schwinn custom lowrider that’s on the HKFA & A site. Also, pleased to report that we’ve hung a good number of the paintings recently purchased. We’ll post pics soon. Or, take the trip to Hiden and see them for yourselves!

Sales Report - The Warehouse

What are the three most important things in real estate? Location, location, location. That is also true in the antiques business. Moving the pieces in the warehouse from Philadelphia to our booth at Hiden Galleries prompted a flurry of sales. The four red industrial cabinets, the four tapered wood columns, the carpenter’s work bench and a long, finished back church pew have all sold. Also, the two sets of Paris (Maine) folding chairs have also sold. Be sure to check out our booth before your next treasure is snapped up.

Warehouse Moves to Hiden

For everybody who emailed asking about the great pieces in the Warehouse... they’re in Hiden Galleries. We spent the weekend in the Philadelphia warehouse, gathering the pieces for the booth at Hiden Galleries. In addition, we put two sets of Paris (of Maine) folding chairs, one in child’s size!
